Mothers are amazing people. And last week, my sister and I nominated our mom for Farm Mom of the year. My sister printed the essay with a picture of our barn on the backdrop for Mom for Mother's Day. I thought I would share our essay because our mom is an extraordinary woman and everyone who knows her would agree. So, in 297 words (just made it under that 300-word limit), here is why our mom deserves to be Farm Mom of the Year:
Our mom is known throughout her small community for her friendly and outgoing personality. For the past 15 years she has been an active 4-H club leader, hosting club events, being a constant presence at the county fair as well as leading a variety of community service projects. Although this community involvement is very much a part of who she is, we know her best as a hard-working farm mother. We learned the value of responsibility and hard work growing up with a cow-calf operation, and there hasn’t been a year we can remember where Mom hasn’t had a bottle baby or at least one holiday weekend that wasn’t spent working or moving cattle. Our father is a veterinarian and after years of having newborn sick calves in the kitchen, the remodeling of the farm house included an addition of a “calf room” specifically for this purpose, complete with pictures of past home-raised show cattle on the wall.
Her sense of the importance of the family farm extends past her nuclear family as she and her brother took over the operation of her late uncle’s cattle and farmland, just as they managed their family’s dairy and farmland after their father’s early passing. In addition to maintaining the farmland, she has set aside land for conservation and wind power. She also gives back to the agriculture community by being an active member of Women, Land and Legacy, an organization dedicated to empowering women in agricultural decisions on a local level. Our mother is an incredible woman with her roots deep in her farm life. She understands the importance agriculture and shares that passion not only with her children, but also with her community. More than a great influence on agriculture, she’s the best mom one could ever imagine.
Keep your fingers crossed--regional winners are announced next week. If she wins, you can bet you'll hear about it!
