Domingo: El Yunque

Sunday was the only dad I didn't work in the field while in Puerto Rico.  I did some computer work in the morning and around noon I picked Greg up and we headed to El Yunque, the rain forest in the north eastern section of the island.  We stopped for lunch on the way and the trip took us through San Juan and almost 3 hours to get there, but it was pretty neat!  There was a nice visitor's center and about 10 km of road that ran into the forest, but by no means got into the heart of the forest.  We only had 3 hours to explore (they closed the gates at dark) so we stuck mostly to the road and went on one of the shorter hikes to a waterfall.  The trails were grooved cement--very nice!  It rained most of the time we were there so we experienced the rain forest and cloud forest both in one day!  It was a long trip and we had fun; I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story!
My trusty little Suzuki
Huge tree!  See Greg at the base?  The placard said this tree was at least 300 years old.
Waterfall on the roadside

Viewing tower--it was pretty cloudy when we went up

Lots of streams
We hiked about 20 minutes to get to this waterfall-- people were swimming in the pool at the base when we got there
Trail and bridge to the waterfall--very well maintained!

The clouds cleared just before we left and you could see the shore from the mountains
