Let the sun shine

It's rained here for the past few days making living in a tropical paradise a little less enjoyable. I woke up the other morning wet because I left my window open and apparently it rains every day in Kalaheo. Well, now I know. The crazy thing about the rain is that it acutally makes things clearer over the water and I swear for the past two days Ni'ihau has been inching closer to Kauai...

Last week was really busy. I took the rental back (was that just last week?) after getting my car checked out, spent the evening at Salt Pond Beach on Tuesday night. Wednesday was dull--paddling got rescheduled because of a funeral on the beach, which, by the way, went on for hours and I could hear 2 blocks away in the apartment. I kinda wanted to go and check it out but thought that might be a little creepy. Thursday was the culmination of my social life on this island; I had four places to be that evening!! Paddling was rescheduled and I had to miss it because I got invited to Kalaheo to Jeremy's house for a potluck supper. Same crowd as what's on the beach on Tuesday nights. It was nice--I brought apple snicker salad and everyone loved it :) Met a few new people that night. Missed sailing because I thought I would go to paddling and ended up stopping by Rick's to hash out the week. We're each other's sounding boards and the people he manages have been messing up quite a bit lately...

Anyway, Friday rolled around and at work I harvested gibone (not sure on the spelling), the Hawaiian orange. Silly they call it that since there's no way gibone can be a Hawaiian word (no g's or b's in their alphabet). It was pretty fun--the trees are on Pioneer property and this crazy lady I work with took a big stick while I climbed the branches and we got a dozen or so and shared. They're big--it takes me a week to eat one. Similar to a grapefruit but not as sour. Friday night I went to the Hanapepe Art Night again and bought a book at the Talk Story bookstore. Rhian and her roommate Craig were playing there so I took in the music. Rick lives in Hanapepe so I took him along and we ended up down at Salt Pond enjoying the stars and contemplating life. It's a different world out here...

Saturday I had my happy little self out of the Pioneer apartments early only to drive and find my new place completely empty and the fridge in a box on the lanai. It was really disheartening. I called my landlord after addressing my warming food items and came back later and helped to put the fridge in. Slowly but surely the place is getting put together and now I have not only a fridge but a kitchen sink, an oven, a tv, a bed, a chair and foot stool, a table and chairs, dresser, and a misplaced cabinet thing that would like to call itself an island. It's so sad that it's so small, furnished well, and yet it's empty. I own little to nothing. Anyway, back to Saturday, I got invited to a Halloween party so I went--it was in Lihue and I had not met the hostesses but got invited and figured the best way to meet people was not to sit in my little studio. I went as a witch--the hat was $1 and I had a black dress and a Swiffer (modern-day witch, of course). It was a pretty tame party, but I did meet some people and spoke again to a few I had met before. Plus, I got invited to go camping at Polihale with that group next weekend. Polihale is supposedly one of the most amazing beaches on the island along the Na Pali coast. It's the longest beach in Hawaii at 17 miles long and dunes up to 100 feet high. I bought a tire pump just for the occassion (you have to let a lot of air out of your tires to drive on the sand and get back home again).

Sunday, if I recall, was dull. Went to Costco (it's all the rage here--I'm a member to save 30 cents on my gas, which still leaves it at $2.79 a gallon, mind you). Sat around my place a lot, if I recall correctly. It was raining so there was little to do outside. This week has been less exciting by far save Halloween. I went over to Rick's to hand out candy and I was all dressed up in my witch costume. A whopping 13 kids stopped by. Oh well, more candy for me :) It's kind of wierd here--a lot of the kids weren't even dressed up and when they came to the door they didn't knock or anything, just waited for the door to open. Weird.

I finally broke down and got a TV because my wireless internet isn't working anymore and although I got a library card and some good books, there's really nothing like the gentle glow and hum of a TV. It's sad, I know, but you try living in one room by yourself for 5 days with little entertainment. I was going to try and make it until this weekend, but when paddling was rescheduled again yesterday because of the rain and I thought of another night with Nicholas Sparks, I went to the Big K. Sad story is that there's a funny coloration so I'll have to take it back anyway.

Sorry this one's not as exciting as some, but that's how life goes sometimes. Rick and I are planning on hiking this weekend and we might head down to Po'ipu to go snorkeling and laugh at tourists. Or perhaps golfing--there's a golf course near where I live where you golf all day for $8. Club rental is $7. Neither of us know how to golf, really, but hey, $15 is cheap for a day's worth of entertainment. We'll see. I'll report back and hopefully have some sweet pictures. Oh, and in exciting news, I'll be home for Christmas December 24-29--Thanks Dad!! Hope all is well, I'm off to paddling practice~
