Long weekends are the best

Despite the frigid temperatures, I had a very pleasant long weekend. Thursday evening (though technically not part of said weekend) was a Wartburg happy hour in Des Moines. Free appetizers and a chance to catch up with fellow 'Burgers in the capital city. Friday afternoon left me frustrated as my professor assigned me to a new research project. Not a huge deal since I hadn't really started any lab work, but I did read a number of journal articles to familiarize myself with material I no longer need to know.

Friday night Rick and I went to celebrate a Pioneer co-worker's 40th birthday. We had a good time and ate way too much food. Saturday some college girlfriends were in Des Moines and we took in the dog show, a girly movie, and the Buccaneers hockey game where I saw my first-ever hockey fight. I was so pumped! Sunday I spent the majority of the day in my cozy bed reading new material. Why the bed, you ask? In addition to not having to get dressed, flannel sheets, a down comforter, and an additional comforter make it the warmest place in the house.

Which brings me to another discussion point: our house. While I love the house, I do not like the amount of money I'm spending on gas to go to school. Or the fact that we can't get the Internet. Or the price of propane. Or that the landlord hasn't fixed anything we asked (chunks of ceiling are falling on top of the washer and dryer). We have decided that, being 2008, we need to have the amenities available to the rest of the world and will be relocating to Ames. I will be closer to school and the lab where I will be doing research and Rick can easily find someone to carpool to work with. Seeing as how he has a set daily schedule, we think this will work out better even though it's not the mid-way point. If you have any recommendations of great places to live, please let me know. We're thinking townhome since it's a college town and apartment may equal loud/puke in my hallway. Plus, if you do it right, you don't have to shovel or mow.

Anyway, back to the weekend. Allyson had some free tickets to the Funny Bone so we saw Joe Starr. If you get the chance to see him, I highly recommend his show. Monday ISU was closed so I worked at Pioneer to get some dough. And now I'm back in the lab office trying to learn about my new research before my meeting about said project. I hope all goes well. Stay warm--flannel-lined pants come in handy!

But what about poor Maggie? I can understand your frustrations, though. The biggest drag will be the move, but that too won't be all that bad with your network of friends. Glad you are readjusting to academia- hang in there! Cinda
