Fall

Fall. I love the warm afternoons and crisp evenings, the beautiful colors and the clean air. I think I could love it more if Iowa State would win a football game every once in a while... But that doesn't keep us from cheering!

Things are going well. I rocked my first transmission genetics take-home test which is great, considering I put a ton of time into it. Probably too much. But that's the way it goes sometimes. I have been doing some good work in the lab as well (until yesterday when my standard curve was all wonky...). So good in fact that my boss mentioned we may be submitting my latest work to a new conference. I have decided to really focus on school work this weekend and not just say I'm going to--we'll see how that goes. I'm working on another take home test and some homework this evening and tomorrow I'm diving head first into that manuscript. I need to get it written so I can start writing up the next results. Going back to school has taught me that I'm not a huge fan of the politics of it all--judging success by the number of published works. Boo. That requires not only the work but the skill of cohesive writing--something I don't think I have mastered. But I am happy with my decision to complete a Masters degree and not a PhD and I keep telling myself every day that I'm one day closer to that piece of paper hanging on my wall.

In other news, went home last weekend to go dress shopping with Allyson and to help Mom out with the 4-H food stand at the calf sale. My parents' house is really transforming--I should take some pictures and show the progression. I learned how to wallpaper last week--I put up the border in the calf room (yes, you read that correctly). Yet another life skill I can add to my well-rounded person resume.

On a side note, wouldn't that be fun if there was such a piece of paper? Skills: cooking from a box, SCUBA diving, ability to drive a stick shift... I love it! Actually, my most recent resume includes my SCUBA and pilot certifications. My first boss in Hawaii said it was one of the main reasons they hired me--showed I had a sense of adventure. I thought it was the only time it might be a positive qualification.

Speaking of Hawaii, that same old boss called early this week and asked if I would be interested in coming out over Christmas break to work. Heck yes! Do I want to come out to Kauai for free and be paid enough to cover spring tuition? Yes please. I had to work it out with my PI here at the lab, but he said it was my vacation and I could do what I wanted with it. Hawaii it is. The tickets aren't purchased yet, but the wheels are in motion. I will be super excited when I get the confirmation call. Rick got excited as well and decided to come out while I was there--his tickets were purchased this morning. We've already started making a list of places we want to see, things we want to eat, people we want to catch up with. I am very excited to be able to revisit the old stomping grounds. Lately the clarity of the night air has reminded me so much of the island evenings. I can't wait. But first is Disney World. And before that, homework. Which reminds me, I should get back to work...
