So I'm a dork, but we already knew that. I took this evening to have a "me day" and in the process of finding Hanapepe's zip code, I ran into some really great trivia in the phone book (the Paradise Yellow Pages, to be specific). I thought it was interesting and thought I would share. So, here goes:
-Hawaii is the most isolated population center on the face of the earth. Hawaii is 2,390 miles from CA; 3,850 miles form Japan; 4,900 miles from China; and 5,280 miles from the Philippines.
-From east to west, HI is the widest state in the US.
-The Hawaiian islands are the projecting tops of the biggest mountain range in the world.
-The Hawaiian Archipelago consists of over 130 scattered points (with the 8 main islands being the easternmost) of land stretching some 1,600 miles in length.
-The wind blows east to west in HI. Highest recorded temp is 96 and lowest (under 3000 feet altitude) is 56.
-The island of Ni'ihau has a population of 230 and is privately owned (and inaccessible to all but family members--even then there is a small time frame when off-island relatives may use privileges).
-Honolulu is the largest city in the world--at least it has the largest borders. According to state constitution, any island not named as belonging to a county belongs to Honolulu. This makes all islands within the Hawaiian Archipelago that stretch to Midway Island (1,500 miles NW of Hawaii) part of Honolulu. Therefore, Honolulu is 1,500 miles wide--more distance than halfway across the 48 contiguous states!
-Halekala Crater on Maui is the world's largest crater.
-The island of Kahoolawe was once used as a target by the US Navy and Air Force, which are cleaning up unexploded shells. No one is allowed ot go ashore without permission.
-The Big Island (Hawaii) is twice the size of all other Hawaiian Islands combined.
-The largest contiguous ranch in the US is on the Big Island--480,000 acres of land!
-Ka Lae is the southernmost point in the US. There is a constant 27 knot per hour wind blowing east to west, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
-The Big Island is the worldwide leader in harvesting macadamia nuts and orchids.
-Kilauea Iki on the Big Island is the world's most active and largest volcano.
-Mauna Kea (on the Big Island) is the tallest mountain in the world when measured from its base at the ocean floor.
-The Big Island houses the world's biggest telescope and more scientific observatories in one place than anywhere else in the world.
I thought they were interesting, anyway. Trying to catch up with e-mails and getting into the Christmas spirit with the Muppets and A Christmas Story. Had a year-end evaluation with my big boss today--went well. And, in a great twist of fate, I don't have to work this weekend! Hello beach and Christmas craft fair! I'm getting really excited to move into my new place in Hanapepe and getting to know my new roommate better--we're going to have a great time together. Also getting into the Christmas spirit. More excitement to come when it comes my way. Livin' for the weekend--aren't we all?
