Abroad, but not alone

Even though we were across an ocean, the ten year anniversary of September 11th was all around us.  The BBC and other English speaking channels we had run across our 10 days in Europe were all running stories on 9/11 all week, as well as many other channels in different languages.  On the actual anniversary, all of the channels that came in at our hotel were running live coverage of the memorial ceremonies.  Many churches in Paris were holding memorial ceremonies, and across the River Seine from the Eiffel Tower at the Palais de Challot stood two white towers that read "The French will never forget," one in English, one in French.  The towers had the names of those who lost their lives that day and an American flag flew above the building.  We saw many armed guards walking the streets in tourist areas; I think everyone was on high alert.

We were thousands of miles from home, yet we were far from alone.
