Fair time!

Just as I was missing the Iowa State Fair, the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair rolled around. I caught wind of it the other day, and was pumped to go. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed. I get so caught up in the feeling of fair in the air...

There was a whole lot of midway and commercial building going on, but the farm fair was a little on the lacking side. Take the 4-H department for example: no exhibit building and the livestock tent had 5 market beef (two of which were Hereford crosses, mind you), 8 hogs, half a dozen sheep, and 6 pens of broilers. Caught part of the hog show in the small round pen they had constructed. I was a little surprised not to see any horses considering how large the rodeo system is around here.

The commercial exhibits were very nice though. Lots of gardening with beautiful orchids and a plethora of tropical fruits. Some baking and fine arts, but mostly gardening. Fair food isn't quite the same either; instead of pork sandwiches and corn dogs there was adoboe plates and saimin. Watched some entertainment on the aptly named entertainment tent. All of the agricultural companies were represented (Syngenta, Pioneer, Monsanto, GMO-free Kauai, etc.), but for a 'farm fair' as they call it, there sure was a lot of pavement--it was held on a large parking lot.

But I had a blast. There's just something about a fair that gets me. Plus, it had a local feel--Kauai's own special touch on what to me feels like a Midwestern classic.
