Friday night was Little Black Dress night. I'm not sure when LBD started, but this is at least the 4th LBD I have orchestrated. The goal is just to dress up so you feel foxy and go out with girlfriends to a classy restaurant, enjoy each others' company and just feel good about being young, beautiful, and a woman. Sounds silly, but they're always really fun and even though the crowd always changes and we may not all be best friends before the night starts, we always accomplish our feel-good goals and have a great time.
It's so busy in the summer and hard to plan around the potential couple dozen people you want to attend, but though our LBD crowd was small we had a great time. And although we weren't all friends at the beginning, I think it's pretty safe to say that we had all bonded quite well by the end of the night :)
We started off our night at the Cafe in Ames. I had heard that it was a great place to eat, but hadn't gotten around to eating there yet. Everytime we've gone to try it out, it's been really busy. It was the perfect place for LBD. Good food, slightly on the fancy side but not necessarily pricey. They also had some nice specialty martinis, making me feel classy and an oh-so-chic 20-something... Above is Sara, me, Lauren, Anne, and Theresa--Sara is an ISU grad student (though that's not how I met her) and I met the other three in college.
After our meal, we didn't want to call it a night just yet. We thought about going out for drinks, but we all thought it might be fun to go somewhere and turn heads by doing something a little different--bowling in our LBDs. We headed out to Perfect Games, the new bowling alley/arcade/perfect place for a 13-year-old's birthday party. We felt really sexy in our bowling shoes with our dresses, but we were in the "VIP" bowling section--they have couches and tables instead of those traditional uncomfy chairs. We all bowled at least one empty frame (two gutter balls) and I think the high score was 71. Yes, 71. But we had a lot of fun.
Perhaps one of the greatest things about LBD night besides spending time with your girlfriends is turning heads. We had lanes with young gentlemen on either side of us and they were very friendly, helping us "improve our game" and asking if we were a bachelorette party. Yeah, it's been a while since I've been actively hit on while bowling in a dress. But it's fun. We ended up hanging out with two guys and a girl that were on the next lane and challenged them to laser tag.
Yes, you heard me right. Laser tag. In dresses. Apparently these guys were in the military so we thought we would get creamed, so the first game it was boys against girls. We dominated. Probably because we vastly outnumbered them! Anne's face is fierce here, but she earned it--she was the top killer! It was so fun!!! Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, Lauren's gun didn't work so we got a free game. We changed up the teams and the girls didn't do so well the second time. And I fell from 2nd sniper the first game to next to last the second game... Oh well.
The guys asked us to go out after the laser tag but it was nearly 1:30 and we figured the bar would close as soon as we got there. But LBD was a success not only for the girl bonding time, but Sara got some digits! Way to go, girl! And thanks, ladies, for making it another great LBD night!
