Household changes

Things have been busy around here and there have been some fairly major changes to the household. Mid-August we sealed the deck when Rick's dad was up for his last visit. You can't really tell in this photo, but the deck is a little darker and now waterproof!

Another big and more recent change to the yard is the 6 foot wood fence. The hope was for a little privacy from the road behind the house (the traffic on the road will probably pick up sooner or later) and to one day keep the kids and dog in the yard. Three gates, one on each side of the house and one in the back. We will seal the fence next summer or so. Yet another task... We really like the way it looks, and somehow it seems like our yard is bigger now that it's fenced in. Not sure how that works.

The latest, and biggest change in our lives, has been the addition of a 9-month-old lab mix we named Darby. I grew up with outdoor dogs and Rick hasn't had a dog before, but we seem to be getting along well. We went to the Animal Rescue League just to look and came home last Thursday and walked out with a dog and no toys, no crate, no food, nothing. A quick trip to the pet store and we we had the essentials.

We've been learning together. We knew that she knew how to sit, and we kind of lucked out with the rest. She's apparently house trained and crate trained and knows how to lie down. We've worked on some manners like sitting before she comes in from outside so she doesn't tear around the house and not jumping on guests and she's getting better, but we'll probably do some obedience classes. We weren't good with the leash at first, but Rick bought a harness yesterday and that seems to be helping with our walks.

She's a lot of fun and pretty smart, well behaved in the house. There will be plenty of stories about her in the future, but I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce Darby!
