Good news: Flossie has been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane as of 8 PM. It's still off of the Big Island of Hawaii (if you need a geography lesson on the Hawaiian Islands, check this out) and although the island is fundamentally shut down (schools and businesses and such), they're only experiencing wind, high surf, and rain. Not even sure if it's tropical storm strength or just heavy precip.
What does that mean for us? Still not sure. Should know pretty well tomorrow morning. The storm slowed down tonight (8 mph) and died down a little but it also shifted northward. The eye is less well-defined. It wouldn't make it as far as Kauai until about 8 PM on Wednesday if it keeps on the same path at the same speed.
But you've got to love the Hawaiian style. After canned goods and water, the highest selling items were cigarettes and beer. Reporters are at closed beaches in the wind and rain and there are surfers taking advantage of the increased surf. And the Salt Pond gang is planning a hurricane party tomorrow night in Rhian's parents' basement (basements are rare around here) which is built into the side of a mountain. Can't get much higher from flooding or better grounded than in the side of a mountain, right? I'm finally beginning to relax a little about the whole thing. Ask me again tomorrow morning...

Have a great time at the hurricane party - any excuse for a party is better than none. I'm so glad things are calming down a bit for you. Hope our talk last night helped a bit. I love you more than you'll ever know.
