Snow day!!!

The meteorologists have been talking about this storm for nearly a week, and it didn't disappoint. Nearly everything was shut down today, Pioneer and ISU included, and I was so excited to see if they called off school that I actually got up before I usually do and was so excited I couldn't go back to sleep. I know, it's pathetic. But how often do grownups (or pseudo grownups) get snow days?
I made pancakes for breakfast, and around 9 this morning we went out to explore. This is Rick's first major snowstorm and we had just bought him snowpants and sleds on Monday. We broke them out this morning. Even though we didn't dare drive out in the weather, we found a snow hill near the apartment and sledded on it for a little while.
The door to our apartment was drifted in, as were the garages outside. I have seen more cars on the road and highway 30 in the past hour than I have all day, though they can still be counted on both hands. Shortly after midnight, someone got their car stuck turning into our apartment's driveway. Before we could get dressed to help them out, someone else pushed it out of the snow.

The blowing snow was the real bugger, causing big drifts and whiteout conditions. Although it was cold and we got near a foot of snow, it's the wind that really causes the problems.

Interstate 80 east of Des Moines and 35 between Ames and Des Moines are closed. Highway 30 that runs just south of our apartment appears to be open. I had heard earlier today that the DOT had pulled plows off the road until it stopped blowing so much. Although it's still a little nasty, I suspect they will be working on that again soon...

It has been a nice day--crafting, baking, playing games with Rick, relaxing. Rick is making chili for supper and it smells good. Everyone has been focusing so much on today's storm, I wonder what will happen tomorrow. Many things are already closed and it seems like no one is thinking about where we go from here. Blizzard warning expires later this evening, but the morning commute will undoubtedly be a little crazy.
Looks like we've guaranteed ourselves a white Christmas! Yay!!!
