Summer already?

Where did spring go? I'm making plans for the summer and the weather is HOT--why does time always fly by?

Things have been keeping us busy. Nothing major, just hanging out with friends, riding Maggie, meeting the new neighbors--they are very nice! Highlights of the past few weeks include attending a bout of the Des Moines Derby Dames, grilling in the backyard, buying some flowers for the flower box (finally), a visit from my sister, trying to defeat Bowser, watching too much TV. I babysat Caelyn last week as well; she was very tired and we didn't get to have much fun together, but there's something about rocking a baby to sleep, even when she's screaming and pushing away from you. Maybe next time we'll be able to play more.

Maggie has had a weird crack and possible abscess on one of her hooves, so I've been tending to it. It hasn't been bothering her at all, but the farrier suggested I soak it in Epsom salt to see if anything would fester out of the abscess. How do you soak a horse's foot in Epsom salt, you ask? Apparently they make booties for just such a thing. Putting it on is a bit of a chore, but it tightens at the ankle and makes soaking pretty easy since they can't really kick it off (or tip it over like they would a bucket). The first day she was not excited about the whole deal, but she warmed up to it pretty quickly. It's looking better every day and I think we'll be able to avoid putting on a shoe just to keep her hoof from cracking apart.

We've been out in the field the past few days and it's been HOT. I think yesterday I may have encountered heat exhaustion (or is it stress? Not stroke, surely). I was outside all day then rode my bike home. By the time I got home, I was needing water and cool air--I laid on the cool tile for a while and Rick was concerned that my body temperature wasn't coming down easily. After an hour of slothing around with a wet rag on my neck and drinking water to the point I felt water logged, I took a lukewarm shower (I can't do cold showers). Well, during the shower my belly broke out in a big, itchy rash. Then my legs started itching like crazy (yet strangely there was no rash there...) I couldn't take it anymore, took two Benadryl, and was dozing in the chair around 7:30 and asleep in bed by 8:30. Summer-1, Ashley-0. I don't get the itching, but that's the 3rd time in recent history where I've gotten hot and broken out in a rash. I told Rick I was allergic to exercise.

Not too much else exciting. Our Pampered Chef fundraiser ends tomorrow--check the last post if you would like to order!

Send that heat our way? We have had a few warm days but keep getting rain to make the nights too cold to go jacket-less... It is hard to think of it being June soon without the sunlight.

I feel bad for Maggie and can't imagine trying to heal a horses hoof- I think I'll stick with dogs.

Not to mention we went to a horse ranch last weekend. It was near this place we trekked to eat lamb and we decided to check it out- one of the girls who just moved to town used to ride horses in Canada. Anyway, we were having fun, walking along, when our Japanese friend pointed out blood running down my leg. I hadn't felt anything but apparently I was bitten by horseflies- like 8 times. I was all good that night but the next two days my ankle was swollen to twice its size. I had never heard anything about horseflies being so bad!

Stay out of the sun and get a water bottle, missy! Funny that you would get heat stress in Iowa but not Hawaii. Poor Rick having to be a Dr. That is how Motoaki felt about having to ice my bitten leg- why have children when you are already taking care of a big baby.
