Just another weekend on the island

I'm beat. I don't know what it is about Sunday, but I'm usually tired at the end of the day. Perhaps it's because I run and run until I'm exhausted...

Thursday night I met up with some friends at Poipu Beach for a birthday party--nothing extravagant, just pizza at the pavilions. It was nice, though. And I met a guy whose mom lives in Northwood. Crazy, huh? I didn't know her though.

Friday brought the Waimea Town Celebration--a fairly impressive set of event considering the town is less than 2,000 people. Both Friday and Saturday was a craft fair, food booths, live music, a beer garden, a rodeo, a softball tournament; Saturday also sponsored a outrigger canoe race (the first of the season), a 10k fun run (how is that fun?), an ice cream eating contest, hat lei contest, ukulele contest... Seriously, the size and scope of this thing was amazing. Rick and I went on Friday night and ate until we were full, walked around, saw the team roping at the rodeo. Called a fairly early night since Saturday morning was whale watching.

As I had mentioned in a previous blog, I volunteered to help the NOAA whale watch to observe the number and behavior of the whales. The four hours went pretty quickly--there was quite a bit of activity the first few hours, but all I saw in the last hour was my leg turning a lovely shade of red. Fun though; I told the nice site coordinator that I would be back to count again next month and she hugged me--yes!

After whale watching, Kristin and I went couch shopping and found one at the thrift store down the street but didn't pick it up yet--going to go and get it tomorrow (assuming it's still there). We're both pretty pumped to have real furniture in our house, even if it is used. Rick took me to the movies Saturday night and, on a spending whim, I finally broke down and bought a microwave (yes, I have been living a successful life for the past 5 months without a microwave). It looks so shiny on top of the fridge--I feel so much more technologically advanced by the sheer presence of the microwave in the house.

Today was pretty low-key. Well, if you can count running on a mountain trail at 4000 feet and breaking into Pioneer facilities without knowing my pass code low-key. The hiking trail Rick picked this morning was pretty easy. So easy I decided to run down it to keep warm (silly me, I forgot how cold it is in the mountains). I stopped to pee on the side of the trail and Rick was watching one way when two hunting dogs come barreling down the other direction. I was so scared they were going to eat me (or smell my pee and track me!) but they were pretty nice for hunting dogs.

My new job doesn't require me to work on the weekend, but I did need to go and move some plates in the lab from the dark to the light so the plants could grow. Sounds easy enough, but they have quite the security systems around here. Driveways are blocked by gates and I was told the set of keys I had had a key for the Parent Seed gate on it. Well, turns out I didn't. But I was there, so I parked my car very suspiciously on the side of the main highway and jumped the gate. I did have the key to the door but was not 100% sure on my access code for the security system right inside the door and was unable to get into the other facility to double check the code. 30 seconds inside the door to deactivate it or the cops show up. Great. You'd think having a key would be enough. Fortunately for me, I did correctly remember my access code (I'm so glad I'm pretty good at remembering numbers). Unfortunately for me, I must have spaced out on which button I push after I enter my code to disarm the security. I felt like a bomb was going to go off and I would be in huge trouble (though I have clearance to be in that building after hours). I fumbled around with buttons and think I disarmed it, but I didn't waste any time, just in case. I was literally in the building for 2 minutes and did remember how to rearm the building when I left. I high-tailed it out of there. Too much stress to do something so simple...

Baked a pineapple up-side down cake today with a fresh pineapple--didn't turn out too shabby. Tried to clean a little and just lounged around the rest of the day. I'm ready for another week--Mom and Allyson will be here in less than 2 weeks! Hope everyone in Iowa is loving the snow--I'm so jealous!!
