My first week of work as a Research Associate was fairly uneventful. Meetings and pretending to be busy (which must have worked fairly well). The funny/drama part of the week came when I was microwaving some media at the new lab (in Kekaha--I'm the outsider) and it started to smell like fire. Everyone I had met at that office came to check if there was a fire, then the site supervisor wanted to know what was going on, then the safety lady thought I was emitting toxic fumes... It was quite the ordeal. The funny thing too is the way they approach me--I'm the outsider in their little village and the villagers are scared of the new face. It's funny...
I also went to a genuine Hawaiian wedding with Kristin on Valentine's Day. It was nice--small, but nice. Not really that different if you ask me, aside from the ukulele of course. It was fun too--you know how two young girls analyze their lives and plot out their own theoretical weddings after attending one. One thing I would do differently than the bride--not wear black underwear. Seriously, what was she thinking?
I also went to whale training tonight. I volunteered with the NOAA to watch the humpbacks next weekend so I learned a lot about the whales and the Humpback Sanctuary. It was really interesting. Maybe next weekend I'll share my knowledge after the count. Tonight I had better pack for O'AHU!!!!
