First of all I would like to say that Calsee and Mark were the best guests ever. Not only were they great company, but they were also very considerate. On Monday I went to work and I lent them my car for the day so they could get to the airport. They washed, dried, and put away the dishes, put away the air mattress and sheets, filled my car with gas, and left me cash for parking. We had a lot of fun--I hope they're having fun on the Big Island.
News from the Island: the Superferry arrived earlier this summer and began its runs this week. This was supposed to be a great way to travel between islands and take your car with you. From what I could tell, there was a lot of opposition from the locals between environmental impacts to increased traffic to easier drug trafficking. Somehow the Environmental Impact Study was waived (high speed ferry can't be good for whales, can it?) and the Superferry arrived.
So did the locals.
The Superferry made it in one day. The past two days locals have blocked off the harbor to keep it from docking and now the Superferry has stopped service. It's plastered all over the news, and just looking on the Internet tonight I see it's a nationwide story. Kauai doesn't want it and neither does Maui, the two islands of destination from O'ahu. Nobody asked us. After $40 million of tax payers' dollars to improve the harbors and bringing the boat from Alabama, it's shut down after few short days. It kind of makes me proud that Kauai cares enough about the island that they don't want to harm it, but at the same time reminds me that these are sometimes the same feelings toward Mainlanders that settle here.

I heard about the blockade of the harbor and (after seeing your cruise pix) wondered if it was anywhere near you. It's crazy that the project still went forward with so much opposition.
In other news, we're going to a big tractor pull in 'Sconsin this weekend. :-)
